A Account of Surprising Kindness: When a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor
During 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I assumed to arrange a place to stay upon arrival, yet when I arrived, a major event was happening and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind maybe I could just sleep at the terminal – only to discover the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. Unsure of how to proceed and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and found myself drifting in the direction of a gaming venue, believing it was a place to spend the evening in an establishment that was open all night. This was not ideal at my peak for acing a crucial interview the next morning, however, being a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
We could all use more folks like that woman.
I must have looked lost because a young woman spotted me wandering around the city center and asked if I was OK. I recounted my situation and immediately she offered I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where my interview was scheduled for the next day. She even offered me some free dinner: one of the filled rolls she had taken home her evening job. This gave me a hot shower and a protected spot and secure to spend the night.
Looking back, it’s clear to me the significant risk she undertook being a woman allowing a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. At that time I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I didn’t meet her again, but her act remains etched in my mind her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish karma has returned her act of kindness many times over. Our society requires more people like that woman.
