At least 64 Killed in Rio's Most Extensive Security Action on Gangs

No less than 64 people died in a security raid against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.

Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, local authorities reported. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.

Violent conflicts erupted when approximately 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command responded with gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials confirmed.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "shocked" by the security action, demanding "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful organised crime groups.

State officials confirmed at least 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Many residents were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Locals have compared the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Organized Crime Spread

The criminal network has been growing their territory across the Rio state, expanding narcotics distribution networks and control of the hillside favelas.

Rio's police said over 200kg (441lb) of drugs were captured in the mission, in addition to dozens of firearms.
