Bullish Celtic's manager does not fear dismissal but the Parkhead faithful display fury after derby defeat.
Wilfried Nancy declared he was not afraid of the sack, maintaining, “The team is extremely close to changing our fortunes,” despite sliding worryingly close to the exit with a heavy defeat by their arch-rivals.
A Second-Half Collapse Sees Derby Disaster
Celtic were ahead Rangers at half-time but a second-half capitulation enabled Rangers to pull level on points with the current league title holders. The French coach, who was hired from Columbus Crew, has now overseen six losses in eight fixtures.
“The board and I are united at the club,” stated the manager.
Pressed on his own future, Nancy replied: “It’s not on my mind. My focus is on discovering solutions to help my team to improve on small moments.
Fan Fury Outside Parkhead
The fans voiced their fury – towards the board and manager – by gathering outside the stadium. The hierarchy are reportedly likely to return to the interim manager, who steered the club during a interim spell last year, if Nancy departs.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. That is the truth for the moment. However by saying that’s how it is, I am not saying that I am giving up. Not at all. What I mean we are really close, extremely close to reverse our form.”
“Really, Really Close”
Nancy highlights the fact his team play well for a half at a time. For instance, if not for missed chances they might have been greater than 1-0 up. “The performance had merit except the fact that we didn't take more goals,” he said. “I accept that we lost, but it's important to stay objective.
“The standard we had at certain moments was exceptionally high. That is a fact. I could not say that if it was different. But that’s why, regarding outcomes, I noted it's a repeating pattern. That’s why I said that a change is coming to a shift in fortunes. Currently: details, details, details.”
“There were plenty of positives that we did, once more. However comes down to consistency. My outlook would be different if I didn't believe it. This is why I am a big believer we will manage to get back on track.”
Röhl’s Cautious Response
The victorious boss was cautious about a serious challenge despite what felt like a landmark win. “One match at a time, and we can gradually build momentum,” he said. “The confidence in the squad is outstanding.”
