Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial names in the frame to succeed Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was dismissed on the weekend following the team's 10-match winless start to the top-flight campaign.
And both candidates - each of whom have previous associations to the club - are among the options to be considered by the club ownership.
The manager is currently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a possible obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton head coach - who played over a century of appearances for Wolves during his time as a player - is considered a leading contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the Wolves board as they start the search of hiring a fresh manager.
Gary O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a shock appointment considering he was sacked by Wolves in December last year.
The ex- West Ham player is out of work meaning the club would not need to provide any compensation.
