An iconic tropical holiday destination situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal said to be worth A$1.2 billion.
“We are honored to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a company executive.
Details of the Sale
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family owners, subject to customary approvals from regulators.
The family released a statement noting they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “unique position in the affections of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island covers over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the area is built upon, featuring a substantial array of amenities:
- Five hotels
- Over twenty restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
- A marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and workforce, as well as a wide network of local partners, vendors, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The late Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.
The island's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.

The acquiring firm also owns luxury hotels and resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
