Citizens have assembled across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel answered by launching a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership postponed formal remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli broadcast stations.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed across the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the provisions of the plan.

A senior representative familiar with the negotiations revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source explained the morning session finished without tangible results, because of disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the deal.

He added that the discussions are "tough and have not yet deliver any major advancement," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the differences between the conflicting groups.

Essential Matters in Negotiations

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid distribution
  • After-conflict management of the territory

Public Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the assault on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere feels like home any longer and until every captive return none of us will be secure."

"When we see all home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence recover," she added.

Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be surviving.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be secure."

Research now consistently show that around the majority of the population want the war to end in return for the release of the abducted.

Palestinian Situation

At the area of the gathering, mourners assembled to honor the dead.

From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the early hours of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"As the dusk comes, the anxiety appears with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, explained.

"My family are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, notably my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we look at the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will come back to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had accepted the corpses of six people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the southern city of Khan Younis said another two victims had been transported. An individual was died by Israeli troops while seeking assistance to the south, medics said.

The territory's health ministry reported twenty-five of the {territ
