Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Attack
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be building momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
