New York City Mayor Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his plan to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, describing him as a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Nonetheless, in a recent development, Mayor Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to appear with Cuomo in areas where he maintains strong support.

“It's essential to mobilize the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how critical this election is,” the mayor remarked.

He added, “Residents have seen their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist his main rival, whose growing support has attracted attention globally and represented hopes for a revitalized progressive wing of the Democrats.

During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa announced they would reject Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Earlier this year, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dropped in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

At an unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered journalists asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”

This development followed a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a heated mayoral debate.
