The Way a US Military Vet Aided María Corina Machado Escape Her Homeland
This audacious getaway of Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado involved a lengthy, “scary” and very wet sea crossing in the dead of night, according to the US veteran who claims to have commanded the mission.
A Perilous Nocturnal Voyage
The rescue organizer, who leads a nonprofit rescue organisation, outlined the mission in a recent media appearance. It was perilous. It was terrifying,” said Stern, a US special forces veteran, recounting dark and choppy conditions that also provided ideal concealment for the escape.
“The ocean was perfect for our purposes, but not water you'd choose to sail on ... the bigger the swells, the harder it is for radar to see,” he remarked.
He recalled meeting Machado out at sea after she departed from the country, where she had been lying low for over a year fearing persecution by the government of President Nicolás Maduro.
The Step-by-Step Escape Plan
Machado embarked on his boat for a half-day journey to an undisclosed location to catch a plane, as part of orchestrated just four days earlier. The operation occurred at midnight – very little moon, a little bit of cloud cover, very hard to see, boats have no lights. Everyone was quite damp. My team and I were soaked to the gills. She was pretty cold and wet, too. She had a very arduous journey,” Stern added.
Describing her condition, he said, “She was very happy. She was thrilled. She was very tired,” adding that about twenty-four people were actively participating within his organization.
Confirmation and Concealment
A representative for Machado confirmed that Stern’s foundation was responsible for the extraction, which began on Tuesday. This account follows earlier stories that Machado wore a wig and a disguise to flee her safe house in a outskirts of the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.
Stern did not divulge specifics about the ground segment, referencing his organization's ongoing operations in the region.
Funding and US Role
He stated publicly the mission was financed by “several benefactors” – with no US government figures involved. Official US funds were not used, to my knowledge,” Stern said.
He clarified, though, that his group did coordinate informally with the American armed forces regarding positioning and plans, primarily to prevent being targeted by airstrikes.
Future Plans and Admiration
Machado said she had US support to depart Venezuela. She has declared her intention to go back, though it is not clear how or when.
Stern said his group would play no part in that operation, as it focuses exclusively on getting people out of countries, not in. “She must decide that for herself. But I think she should not go back. But she wants to. She is a genuine inspiration,” he said.
