Two Separate Cuba-Destined Relief Ships Declared Missing subsequent to Departing the Coast of Mexico.
A large-scale rescue and recovery effort is actively in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing boats carrying humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Military Search and Rescue Efforts Launched
Mexico has dispatched naval assets and military search aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board at least nine total crew members, as stated by a official statement.
The ships had been expected to reach Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
Context of Relief to Cuba
The island nation has leaned on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the country endures multiple nationwide blackouts.
"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are outfitted with proper safety systems and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort commented.
The nine crew members are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their consular staff.
"We are working closely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the official further stated.
Earlier Humanitarian Mission
Previously that week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and warmly received a separate vessel that had carried a significant amount of donated goods to the nation.
That ship, called "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought solar panels, drugs, formula milk, bikes and foodstuffs.
Larger International Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to ship essential supplies to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.
Global bodies have since highlighted "dire" lack of essential goods, with in excess of fifty thousand surgical procedures postponed in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Political measures have increased over the past months, with statements from several leaders highlighting the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.
Responding to previous proposals, a prominent government figure stated firmly that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Indications suggest that early stages of discussions had begun, although their present status remains unclear.
The naval forces stated it was dedicated to using every available asset at its command to find the boats and ensure the safety of the crews.
As of now, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
